I have to do What!? The bizarre Life of Programme Managers
Two years ago, Bob brought the house down at the March chapter event in 2008 on the topic of “Intelligent Disobedience”. In March this year, Bob has once again joined us in Perth to present the bizarre life of programme managers - text book vs. reality.
PMI has nailed the description of what the job of a programme manager SHOULD be.
However, that’s just the beginning as there is much more to this role.
The marketplace of work has created a much different beast. A Programme Manager is not an extension of the project world; rather the Programme Manager is an extension of the management organisation, taking much of the heat and pressure of product delivery off the line management team.
Of course, despite this pressure, the authority model we see in the project world does not change for the programme manager. Everything from workload balancing, prioritisation of efforts (including prioritizing the organization’s portfolio), work assessments and executive briefings frequently fall upon the shoulders of the programme manager in the “real world.”
Find out how successful Programme Managers perform their magic of balancing workload, prioritising efforts (including the organization’s portfolio), work assessments and executive briefings? Hint: They behave like they have the authority – with a twist. Bob will discuss the broad set of responsibilities (without formal authority) that programme managers must navigate in this fun and challenging presentation.
